Multi sports centre, Denmark

Combining indoor activities with daylight and fresh air

In the beautiful historical surroundings of Holmen – a reclaimed military area in central Copenhagen – an innovative new sports centre opened in 2013. The company responsible for this unusual design is COO Architects, a Copenhagen based studio with great experience in public buildings. The architects made the bold decision to introduce daylight and fresh air into the building using venting skylights – a move which is rather uncommon in sports hall design.

Daylight and fresh air stimulates the athlete

The modular skylight solution consists of four longlights with a 20° pitch, three of them located in the 2500 m2 sports hall with a total of 60 VELUX Modular Skylights.

All four longlights are facing north and placed in light wells to ensure smooth, glare-free functional lighting that won’t interfere with the activities below. The angle also protects the athletes from experiencing direct sunlight during the day. A number of the skylights have built-in venting capabilities to ensure a fresh indoor climate, which is ideal for workouts, public meetings and other cultural events.

The light can be controlled with internal blinds
Even the changing rooms take advantage of natural daylight

One supplier for the entire solution

The building was commissioned by the municipality of Copenhagen and contracted by B. Nygaard Sørensen A/S. The VELUX Group was chosen as a partner because of the unique VELUX Modular Skylights and also because the partnership made it possible to build the entire skylight solution with only one supplier.

A one-supplier collaboration liberates the contractor from having to deal with different craftsmen and providers of various components and services for the same skylight. With VELUX Modular Skylights the contractor only has one contact that provides all the various components. Also, due to the modular system’s unique installation concept, the contractor is able to handle the entire process by himself, saving valuable time and money
